The Capital City: The name of the City of Dhamar,
which is also the name of the governorate, is attributed to the
Ancient Sabaean King Dhamar Ali Yahbur.
The
Location:
The City of Dhamar is situated south of the City of
Sana'a, and is the largest city in the governorate. The city
prospered in the Golden Age of Islamic Civilization as an important
center for learning and scholastic activity.
The
population:
The population of the governorate is 1,490,120
according to the 1994 Census.
The
Topography and the Climate:
The governorate has a diversified topography
ranging from mountains to plains and has a moderate climate in the
summer and a cold winter

Diversified Landscape for Environmental Tourism:
The governorate includes within its borders
1. Environmental resources and important natural
sanctuaries as well as a pleasant climate, in accordance with the
topography of the terrain.
2. Medicinal hot water springs, some of which
are mountain springs that shed off steam.
3. mountain mines from which are extracted
precious stones.
Historical and Tourist Sites:
The Red Palm, Adhra'a Dam, the City of Baynoun, the
carved tunnels and the Shahran Palace which goes back to the First
Century AD.
The Hot
Springs:
Hammam Ali Bath in Anis District. This is one
of the most famous therapeutic baths which is situated 35 km from the
City of Dhamar and suitable for the treatment of many ailments.
Hammam Al-Lissy Bath: Situated east of
Dhamar City, there are ancient mines which can be found near this
bath.
Utumah District contains the 'Utumah natural
sanctuary, which is popular as a site for environmental tourism. The
highest peak in 'Utumah is 2,600 meters above sea level.
Agricultural Production:
The governorate is known for its abundant
agricultural production. Among its leading crops are maize, in all
its forms, and good quality coffee. It also grows fruits including
oranges, lemons, tangerines, guava and bananas. The plains of Jahran
is one of the largest elevated plains in area in Yemen.
Transportation:
Dhamar is one of the most strategically situated
areas in Yemen, from which the transportation routes fan out to many
of the governorates of the Republic of Yemen, including the
Governorates of Sana'a, Ibb, Ta'ez, Al-Dhali'a, Lahj and Aden, as well
as a relatively new scenic asphalt road that passes through Al-Sharq
City in Anis District extending to the City of Hodeida.
Handicrafts and Markets:
Dhamar Governorate is noted for its traditional
handicrafts, including jewelry and agricultural tools and copper
pottery.
There are also a number of permanent and regular
periodic weekly markets especially in the districts in the interior of
the governorate.
Among the rich agricultural areas are the Districts
of Wosab Al-'Aly and Wosab Al-Asfal (Upper and Lower Wosab, 'Utumah
District, Ma'abar-Jahran District and Jabal Al-Sharq.
