The old town of Mareb is situated at 155 Km from Sana'a and
it is one of Yemen's most impressive archaeological sites.
It is the capital of the Sabean Kingdom from the fifth
century B.C.
It is surrounded by walls and it has three gates.
There are two dams:
The ancient dam, dating from about 10 BC, its height is
about 14 meters.
The modern dam built in 1986; its height is about 50
meters.
And there are the ancient temples of the Queen of Saba, at
about 2km from the southwest of the old town.
Baragesh :
Baragesh is situated at 125 Km from Sana'a. It is the most
impressive of all Yemen's ancient sites and it was the capital of Main.
It is fortified and surrounded by high walls with 75 towers
constructed from calcite stone and it has 2 gates, the first on in the
west and the other one in the east.
The ancient dam of Ma'areb:
It is situated at 10 Km from mareb.
It is considered as on of ancient architectural
constructions in the world and it is the most known monument in Yemen. It
was constructed in a narrow place in the valley of (theneh) in the eighth
century B.C.
The height of the dam is about 14 meters.
the temple of Balqis or (the temple
of the moon) :
It is situated at 4 Km from Mareb, it was built in the
eighth century B.C.
It is the main temple in Mareb, it contains 8 large colons
and it is surrounded by wall of stone.
The temple of Bran :
It is situated at 1400 meters from the temple of Balqis, it
contains 6 large colons and it is surrounded by wall of stone.
Ramlat alsaba'ateen:
A desert situated between Mareb and Shabwa. The old incense
road to Shabwa was in this desert.
